Practicing Mindfulness: Why You Should Do It and How

by | Jun 18, 2022

The society of today is constructed in a way that grind and hustle culture is lauded, if not rewarded, especially if you’re working in Atlanta. Young professionals are encouraged to work more than they can take, resulting in unhappy employees that are overworked and sometimes underpaid. This leaves everyone feeling exhausted in a way that not even a good night’s sleep can fix.

When you’re stressed, people will tell you to go and take a vacation for a change of scenery. But the reality is, not everyone has the time or the resources to just go on a week-long trip to shake off years of built-up stress. This is where quick and easy stress-relieving activities like practicing mindfulness come in; they are easy, convenient, and free. You can’t really say no to that.

But what is mindfulness and how do you actively practice it? Keep on reading to learn all about mindfulness and to get some tried-and-tested mindfulness tips even beginners can can do.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the state of actively being aware of yourself and your surroundings without judgment. It is essentially a way for you to get in touch with yourself, even just for a few minutes, and be fully present without getting overwhelmed. It is a much-needed reprieve after a stressful day at work or a tiring one at school in Atlanta. When you practice mindfulness, you learn to take a step back from all of these external stressors and just simply let yourself be.

When you practice mindfulness, you become more aware of your surroundings and gain a greater sense of presence. Mindfulness also helps you become calm, ultimately improving your headspace and productivity at work or school. Now that you know some of its benefits, how do you practice mindfulness?

How to Practice Mindfulness?

Here are some quick ways you can practice mindfulness wherever you are, whatever the time of the day.

    Mindful breathing and meditation

Mindful breathing and meditation is one of the more popular ways you can practice mindfulness. Because these methods are well-known, you can easily look up videos or audios on streaming platforms to help you start them. You can choose to begin your journey to mindfulness with guided meditation videos or with some soft, calming music. No matter which method you prefer, what’s important is that you practice mindfulness everyday consistently to get your desired results.

Going on a walk in nature

Going on a walk in nature does not necessarily mean a trip somewhere far away or a vacation on the other side of the country. Going on a walk can simply just be visiting your local park and surrounding yourself with all of that lush greenery without leaving your town or city. As you walk around, pay attention to how you walk, especially the movement of your feet on the ground. Notice how your legs and body move. And if you find your thoughts wandering, bring them back to the sensation of your movement–this is mindfulness.

Create and actively write in a journal

Another safe way you can practice mindfulness is by creating and actively writing in a journal. Nothing is more therapeutic than getting those thoughts out of your head and making space for things that matter. Write down how you feel daily. This will help you keep track of your mood and what triggers its changes. This will also help you reflect on how you are truly feeling everyday.
