What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)? Here’s a Quick Guide for You!

by | Jul 18, 2022

Society has this notion that if you learn a set of concepts (e.g. curriculum in school) you should be able to produce a behavior that gets you a job. Then, you should be able to do something with that behavior and prosper in life. However while we see some people become industry leaders and game changers, others who were in the same class and in the same room end up doing underperforming.

When you were in school, have you ever wondered why some of your classmates would excel and perform great while others would just perform averagely despite being taught the same materials in the same way?

John Grinder, a linguist, and Richard Bandler, an information scientist & mathematician, asked this question in the 1970s. Together, they founded Neuro-Linguistic Programming. But what is NLP?  Let’s break down the 3 words that make up NLP.

What is NLP?

\

Neuro

Refers to the brain or mind, specifically how states of mind affect communication can behavior. NLP teaches a structural way of viewing these mind (and body) states, developing mental maps that show how things happen and how to change course.
\

Linguistic

Meaning that our mind and body states are revealed in our language and how we communicate. Language is how we gain access to the inner workings of the mind. NLP language patterns teach us how to access unconscious information that would remain unknowable otherwise.
\

Programming

This refers the capacity to change our mind and body states. If you’ve heard the term “living on autopilot”, this would mean that a person is living according to their programming, which consists of habitual thoughts, feelings, reaction, beliefs, and traditions.

Still a little confusing? Dr. Matt James, president and owner of the Empowerment Partnership defines NLP as “how do you, as an individual, become more successful by communicating better with yourself and having better communication with other people.”

How will NLP help you with studying or working in Atlanta? It looks at ways our brains interpret the signals they receive (words and non-verbal communication) and how these interpretations affect what we do. This is done through language. By examining how we process information, NLP techniques help us look at our thoughts, feelings, and emotions as things we can control, rather than something that just happens to us.

NLP tries to understand how our mind communicates with itself – the conscious mind with the unconscious mind. It tries to make sense of what goes on between our ears so that we can do something constructive with it.

How does NLP help me in Atlanta?

Because NLP techniques focus on making behavioral changes, there are a variety of different ways it can be used to achieve different goals.

Mental health professionals use NLP either by itself or with other forms of therapy to help treat depression and anxiety. It can also be used to treat phobias and other expressions of anxiety like panic attacks.

NLP can help you even without a serious mental health issue, such as with personal growth. NLP can be useful for building skills like public speaking, sales and negotiation, team building, and leadership.
